Currently, the water from the mixed sewer system in the Sint-Niklaasstraat still flows into the surrounding streams. With a separate sewer system in place, only rainwater will flow into the streams, and wastewater will go undiluted to a water treatment plant. This ensures more efficient purification. Moreover, the sewer system will be less likely to become overloaded during heavy rainfall. Before the rainwater flows into the streams, the planned berms, swales, and buffer basins will first slow down its flow.
In some places, the current sidewalk has subsided. Therefore, a new comfortable and safe sidewalk will be installed everywhere. Additionally, the two-way cycle path will be widened to 3 meters. This space is needed, among other things, for electric bicycles and bike trailers. It also gives cyclists from both directions enough space to pass each other. Finally, the concrete slabs of the roadway will be replaced with a new noise-reducing asphalt layer.
We ensure that rainwater can seep into the ground on-site. Therefore, we are providing unpaved green berms between the road and the cycle path in the Sint-Niklaasstraat. In the Molenstraat, swales (Water Drainage and Infiltration) will be installed.
All bus stops in the construction zone will be renewed with a raised platform. This way, people with wheelchairs, strollers, or heavy luggage can easily board and disembark from the bus.
The construction zone is divided into eight phases, spread over two operational areas. Some phases will run simultaneously, allowing the work to progress faster.
