The main improvement is the construction of safe and comfortable cycle paths. In areas with a speed limit of 70 km/h, separate cycle paths will be created, separated from the road by green zones. In sections with a speed limit of 50 km/h, the cycle paths will be elevated.
In some locations, the cycle path will be bidirectional. For example, cyclists from Hamme and Waasmunster will be able to use a bidirectional cycle path to reach the new leisure center ‘De Meermin.’
At several points, we will provide adapted crossings, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to cross one lane at a time instead of having to cross both directions at once.
Aquafin will take advantage of the reconstruction to install a pumping station and a separate sewer system, which will separate waste and rainwater. Ditches are ideal for capturing and buffering water during heavy rainfall. Rainwater can then slowly seep into the ground. Therefore, we will preserve and upgrade the existing ditches as much as possible. In some areas, the ditches will be moved slightly to make room for the separate cycle path.
A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Abdij van Roosenberglaan with Pontravelaan and Dam. The Kerkstraat and the cycle path running behind the cemetery in Waasmunster will connect to this roundabout.
The bus stops at Waasmunster Abdij Van Roosenberglaan and Hamme Ardoystraat will be redesigned. Buses will no longer stop on the main road but on the side. The stops will have elevated platforms, and the cycle path will run behind these platforms to prevent conflicts between cyclists and passengers getting on and off the bus.
