Total makeover for Hondiuslaan in Duffel

The old sewer system under Hondiuslaan was compeletely worn out and inspections showed serieus defects and leaks in many places, leading to infiltration and soil ingress. Therefore, a seperated sewer system is being installed where the wastewater is directed to the wastewater treatment plant in the Hondiuslaan for purification. Rainwater is buffered and infiltrated as much as possible. Hence, BESIX Infra is carrying out the works at the ponds in the Muggenbergpak to capture rainwater. The poor condition of the old sewer system also manifests in visible subsidence, necedditating the complete replacement of the central collector. The local government of Duffel is taking advantage of the urgent sewer works to renew the roadway. A wide bicycle path is being constructed to improve cycling comfort and safety.

First sewer pipe in geopolymer concrete

The first sewer pipe in geopolymer concrete was installed on this site. One of the main advantages of using geoplymer concrete is the significant lower CO2 footprint compared to conventional concrete.

With this recent implementation of geopolymet concrete pipes in this sewer project for Aquafin, we not only demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and innovation but also conform our role as pioneers in the industry. Our colleagues are particularly proud to be the first in Belgium to install these new climate-friendly pipers.
