Sustainable Transport by Ship: Tar-Containing Asphalt and Soils

30 August 2024

Our facility in Bilzen has been a COPRO-certified storage site for tar-containing asphalt for the past three years, before it is transferred to a thermal cleaning facility in the Netherlands. Instead of transporting the asphalt exclusively by truck as we previously did, we have now chosen a more sustainable alternative: transport by ship.

The asphalt is transported from the loading quay in Genk via the Albert Canal to Rotterdam for thermal processing. On Tuesday, August 27th, a new shipment of 1,500 tons was dispatched. This replaces 52 truck journeys, which not only reduces traffic congestion but also significantly lowers our CO2 emissions.

Annually, more than 8,000 tons will be transported this way, which means we will send approximately 275 fewer trucks on the road.

A Team Effort to Be Proud Of!

The success of this initiative is the result of the dedication and collaboration of a strong team. From our employees responsible for the complex handling of the tar-containing asphalt to our logistics planners who coordinated the transport, everyone has played a crucial role in realizing this sustainable solution.

Our Future Vision

This initiative fits within our broader strategy to integrate sustainable solutions into all our processes. We are constantly seeking ways to reduce our ecological footprint while simultaneously improving our services. For example, we are currently also transporting soils by ship to the Netherlands. This approach allows us to remove an additional 700 trucks from the road.
