It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed honorary chairman, Professor and Baron Paul De Meester.
From 1985 to 2002, Paul De Meester dedicated himself with remarkable vision and commitment to the development and expansion of Société Belge des Bétons-Belgische Betonmaatschappij, later known as BESIX. His leadership and insights proved to be invaluable as we transformed into a leading force in the global construction industry. Johan Beerlandt, vice-chairman of BESIX Group, reflects on Paul as a figure of wisdom and integrity, with contributions to the company that were unmistakable.
Having graduated in civil engineering from the Catholic University of Leuven and pursued further studies in Philadelphia, Paul De Meester also played a pivotal role in the realm of Belgian science. His involvement with SCK CEN (formerly the Study Centre for Nuclear Energy) in Mol and the establishment of the 'nuclear energy' department at the Faculty of Applied Sciences marked the commencement of his distinguished career in academia.
Under his skilled and diplomatic leadership, BESIX underwent significant growth, including the transformation that created BESIX from Société Belge des Bétons-Belgische Betonmaatschappij, the execution of strategic acquisitions, and the launch of innovative projects across the globe.
His departure creates a profound void for all those fortunate enough to have known and worked with him. We offer our deepest condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren, friends, and former colleagues. His legacy will endure in the hearts of the many lives he touched and in the lasting impact he made on our organisation and beyond.
Paul De Meester (1935-2024)
